i've compiled my
BABY STUFF MUST HAVES for my pregnant SIL na nasa malaysia. eto na talaga yung ultimate list for me & im sharing it here as well ... hth!!
BREASTFEEDINGchempre given na that breastfeeding is best for babies (up to 2 years) pero you have to prep yourselves and have your minds set on it kasi breastfeeding is VERY TOUGH, esp sa simula. madali ma-discourage kasi nga naman very challenging ang bfeeding sa simula plus, andali-dali naman magtimpla na lang ng formula. breastfeeding requires dedication and perseverance of the mom talaga and ang daddy naman dapat magbigay talaga ng moral support & encouragement sa mom na magpa-breastfeed. I hope I can convince you guys to breastfeed talaga coz the benefits definitely outweighs all the hardship & drama (na sabi ko nga, sa simula lang naman). this is the link of the article i wrote about breastfeeding, please take time to read it kasi very helpful naman siya -- http://wankultsik.multiply.com/journal/item/482/memoirs_of_the_mama-cow breast pump - medela manual pump - around P3000; medela electric - around P9000
if mom would be indefinetly be a stay at home mom
(SAHM), I think ok na sa inyo yung manual breastpump kasi kasama naman nya si baby all the time. She will need the pump to express breastmilk on those FEW times like pag
1) engorged na or puno na ng milk ang breast & ayaw pa ni baby mag-dede -- if you dont express your milk sasakit ito, grabe..
2) you guys are out with baby and ayaw ni mom mag-breastfeed in public, you feed using a bottle filled with previously expressed breastmilk.
3) if you guys are out & iwan si baby, baby can be fed with breastmilk in a bottle by your yaya
4) need ang pump to stimulate the breast to encourage milk production after nursing, lalo during the early days (habang wala pa or mahina pa ang milk ng mommy).
if in case mom will be working soon, she would definitely need an electric pump. may it be a manual or electric pump, i strongly suggest getting a MEDELA PUMP kasi yun talaga sure na maganda, magaling magexpress ng milk and madali gamitin and best of all, hindi masakit. this may be slightly more expensive than other brands pero everyone agrees (based on forums & reviews) that this is the best pump in the market and its worth the price. other brand na ok ang reviews are avent & ameda.
nipple cream - around P300
breastfeeding moms will definitely get sore nipples from breastfeeding the baby lalo na sa simula -- pang pain-relief baga. Avail sa SM ang pigeon breast care gel & yung palmers nipple cream. I used yung pigeon & ok naman, nakak-relieve naman. The best they say is Lasinoh pero wala kami mahanap nun sa malls pero baka sa imported section ng cash & carry sa makati meron.
breast shells - chicco brand - P200
also for pain-relief, kasi nga sore yung nipples lagi sa simula, you tuck this under the bra para the nipples wont rub against your clothes and para mabilis sila gumaling.
breast pads - P80/ 2 pairs na washable, brand is Pur
pag dumating na yung milk ng mom, sobrang dami nun, as in lagi basa ang tshirt & bedsheets so mom needs this para naman she will look decent during the day & sa gabi naman hindi mababasa yung bedsheet nyo
nursing bra - P300, sorella brand sa sm
even if you are at home the mom should use this, esp if she'll be using breastpads or breast shells kasi the nursing bra will hold them in place. Ok lang naman ang regular bra as long as may easy access/it can be readily lifted up/pulled down when baby needs to nurse
BOTTLE FEEDING about feeding bottles, please take time to read up about BPA issues on feeding bottles on the internet. I know lahat naman tayo lumaki ng maayos without knowing that our feeding bottles before had BPA pero now that we know that they are harmful, bibili ka pa ba ng potential health-hazard for your baby? anyway, should you decide to get BPA-free bottles, cheapest i can find is sold sa ebay.ph or from online sellers sa multiply. expect to spend P100+ per bottle pag bpa free.
also, breastfed babies may encounter nipple confusion so if you can, opt for WIDE-NECK bottles -- yung matataba na bottles that uses wide nipples -- brands like AVENT / PLAYTEX / SASSY / NUBY offers wide bottles. Similar shape kasi ang mga ito sa nipple ng mom so less nipple confusion. standard-necked bottels naman (yung regular shape na nipple lang ang gamit) should be ok too. more accessible pati ang nipples ng mga ito anywhere, usually ANY brand fits any standard-necked bottles, whereas yung wide-necked bottles minsan same brand din dapat ang nipples. (ie, playtex nipples can only fit for playtex bottles) 5 oz bottles – 3 pieces or more -- P350 per 3 pcs, standard necked, gerber clearview/fashiontints (bpa free)
these are optional as younger babies usually drinks 2-4oz lang, perfect for this bottle size pero pag lumaki na siya lilipat din talaga kayo sa tig-9oz na bottles. ikaw din naman ang hahawak so it doesnt matter if its small or big diba. If you buy this, you can also use this to store expressed breastmilk or water for baby.
9 oz bottles – 6 to 9 pieces or more -- P350 per 3 pcs, standard necked, gerber clearview/fashiontints (bpa free)
get atleast 6pcs or more, mga 9-12 pcs, if you don’t want to wash & sterilize bottles more often. Babies use mga 6 bottles maghapon, plus around 3 more sa gabi.
nipples - P64 per 2 pcs, standard necked peristaltic; P200 per 2pcs latex nipples na wide by playtex
theres latex nipple (yung brown) and silicon nipples (yung white na transparent). latex nipples are more preferred by breastfed babies kasi mas malambot (similar to mom's nipples). yun lang, you need to change this more often kasi mas mabilis masira kasi
nga malambot. silicon nipples naman are more durable, long-lasting, and less choking hazard esp pag teething na si baby. any silicon nipple will do. I highly recommend PIGEON PERISTALTIC NIPPLES. These are made from very soft silicone, softer than regular ones (pero mas malambot pa din ang latex)
bottle brush cleaner - around P50
any will do, basta make sure na may attachment na brush na pang-clean ng nipple
sterilizer - farlin electric P2000
I strongly recommend getting an ELECTRIC STEAM
STERILIZER kasi very convenient to use kasi may
automatic off function. Sure its more expensive pero sulit na sulit in the long run kasi sure naman na hindi masusunog/mababasag ang bottles ni baby kahit mapabayaan and mas mabilis ang sterilization time. regular sterilizers kasi you have to wait pa for the water to boil then pag nag-boil tsaka mo lang i-time ng 5mins. pag hindi nabantayan at nasobrahan ng boil surely, sunog/basag ang bote mo hehe! -- sayang naman lalo na if mahal yung mga bottles mo.
bottle organizer - P200
para maayos lang and hindi nakakalat ang mga bote sa kitchen nyo
milk dispenser (stackable) - P60
ito yung plastic cups na patong-patong na lalagyan ng powdered milk. very useful kasi ibubuhos na lang sa bote na may tubig ang pre-potioned (pre-scooped) na milk if you will be formula-feeding
regular dishwashing liquid ok na ang JOY DISHWASHING LIQUID to wash the
bottles / nipples. Just don’t use the anti-bac kind kasi matapang daw yun
dedicated takure Dapat this takure will only be used for boiling water na pantimpla ng milk ni baby. sabi nga nila, to each his own but i think using bottled/distilled water for your baby is not very practical. mom & dad's drinking water should be fine as longh as you boil it for 5 minutes.
BATHING baby tub - P250
baby will be using this until 1-2 years old. Sulit na din kasi you can use this na palanggana for laundry pag malaki na si baby
tub support / mesh - P100-200, depende sa style
buti na lang may ganito na ngayon, very helpful! Parang net siya that put on top of the tub filled with water, then dun mo papatong si baby sa net ng nakahiga para mapaliguan mo siya. With this, well supported si baby and you can use both hands na to bathe him so super dali na talaga magpaligo ng bata & hindi nakakatakot kasi nga well-supported na siya.
baby wash - aveeno P350; cethaphil - around P500+
best to get the mildest baby wash na available na NO-TEAR formulation. Ok naman johnsons top-to-toe wash which is very mild yet mabango pa din. this j&j top to toe wash was also recommended by our pedia and affordable din siya. Kung gusto nyo naman unscented you can use cetaphil instead -- fragrance free yun & hindi pa bumubula but definitely mild talaga. ok din ang aveeno daily wash pero mas mahal pero maganda naman.
bath towel - 2 pcs
dapat may sariling towel si baby. Please get 2 towels para may kapalit habang nasa laundry yung isa.
GROOMINGbaby lotion - aveeno P350; Mas mura ang j&j shempre
the pink J&J baby lotion should be ok but pedia recommends getting a mild formulation na may OATMEAL something kasi very good sa dry skin ang oatmeal. my daughter uses aveeno baby daily lotion, super ganda nito pero mejo mahal at P350/8oz then hindi pa avail sa malls. i also use this even on her face and promise, dito nawala yung mga rashes nya sa face.
baby sunblock - banana boat 50 spf - P250
just in case ilalabas nyo si baby, ok na sun-protected siya. Get atleast 30spf
water sprayer - around P50
regular water sprayer, lalagyan mo ng water plus 1 dollop/squirt ng baby wash nya. For wetting ng cotton balls na gagamitin to change diapers. ako kasi i use wet cotton balls after using baby wipes para sure na malinis ang nappy area plus para mawala yung kung anu mang residue nung baby wipes. chempre kahit nakalagay dun alcohol-free eh malay ba natin diba.
rubber mats - 2pcs, around P80 each
yung goma na mat (square-square), pang-sapin sa pwet ni baby while changing diapers (or all the time if naka-lampin lang siya) para hindi mabasa or ma-dirty yung higaan nya. get 2 pcs para salitan if ever kailangan i-wash yung isa.
diaper cream - desitin, around P300 for 1 big tube
this gives protection against diaper rash and provides relief din in case may diaper rash si baby. Best to get those with Zinc sa formulation kasi zinc is good for the skin. Desitin brand is really good, slightly expensive pero sulit naman kasi 1 tube will last a really really long time
diapers your choice if you want to use regular lampin or cloth diapers or disposable na. my daughter only used disposable nappies since birth kasi mas convenient, wala nang lalabhan and mas dry pa si baby so less prone sa diaper rash. If you opt for cloth diapers, may 2 klase nun -- gauze diaper, yung malambot na manipis na parang gauze nga, and yung birds-eye diaper, yung mas makapal at mas rigid -- slightly like yung tela na ginagamit sa cross stitching pero chempre mas malambot naman. opkors, if you will get cloth diapers, you will need about 2 dozen siguro, probably even more depende how often you can do laundry. babies esp newborns tends to pee a LOT (lagi pa may kasama poop). good luck na lang sa paglalaba. btw, good brands of disposable diapers are prokids, huggies & mamy poko. wala na raw kwenta ang pampers ngayon. lucky for us hiyang daughter ko sa unbranded diapers na teddy123 and this is much much cheaper around P7 lang per diaper. mamy poko & huggies are more expensive, around P10 per pc.
baby wipes (aka wet wipes) - giggles brand P80 per 90 sheets
I use 1-3 sheets every diaper change. get the unscented ones na alcohol free. You can actually do away with this and just use wet cottons instead pero mahirap din esp if madami poop yung baby. I use this muna to clean the area then pag malinis-linis na follow ko pa yun ng wet cotton balls
before drying
cotton balls - P55 per pack of 300pcs
you use this to clean the umbilical stump before it falls off and the nappy area too everytime you change diapers.
70% isopropyl alcoholWalang kwenta if lower %. You use this to clean baby's umbilical stump. Also, dapat wash muna ng hands with soap & water then mag-alcohol sa kamay anyone who will carry the baby, lalong-lalo na pag newborn pa lang.
nail cutter any nailcutter will do, pero dapat merong sariling nail cutter si baby.
comb/brush - P50, pair of comb & brush na
kahit later na lang ito pag malaki na si baby. baby ko magpa-5 months na hindi pa kelangan magsuklay hehe
HEALTH ITEMS j&j warming baby oil ito kailangan talaga as in! You use this when baby is colicky (kabag). Babies are more colicky pag bottle-fed, e yung baby ko breastfed na kinakabag pa din. wawa baby pag may kabag, iyak ng iyak yun. Pedia said never ever use manzanilla or alcamforado sa tummy ng baby for kabag coz it burns the skin. Eto talaga, as in, very mild pero very effective. get the biggest bottle available
salinase - around P20 sa mercury drug store
Inevitable kasi na magka-sipon ang bata and
you would want to give the baby relief siyempre. For colds at stuffy nose, put a few drops of salinase sa nose (para ma-loosen yung sipon ni baby) then
aspirate with a nose aspirator after a few minutes. This is better kasi salinase is just salt solution (not really medicated) e chempre hindi maganda magpainom ng gamot sa baby di ba.
nose aspirator - Pigeon nasal aspirator - P250
unless gusto mo na higupin yung sipon ng baby mano-mano, u will need an aspirator para mawala yung bara sa nose nung baby. those bulb-like nose aspirators simply does not work, trust me. Naka-ilang ganun kami na iba ibang brand, useless haaaayz. Get the PIGEON NASAL ASPIRATOR instead.
nebulizer - around P2000-3000
as mentioned above, hindi maganda sa baby ang nagme-medication and usually for coughs & cold, talagang intayin mo lang na gumaling. Wawa naman ang baby chempre if hirap na hirap huminga due to coughs & colds so to provide relief, you nebulize instead. maganda ito kasi very safe, walang nai-ingest si baby na harmful kasi nilalanghap nya lang yung mist ng nebulizer. very great buy ito kasi nebulizers now are portable -- parang lunchbox lang na maliit ang size. sulit talaga to get this coz this can be used whenever hika/sipon/ubo strikes anyone in your family kasi may attachment ito na pang-adult & pang-bata. we got Omron brand at P3000, watson sells this ng P3500. i heard mas mura to buy this in bambang kasi tabi-tabi dun ang medical supplies.
NSS or NaCl salt solution (a.k.a. dextrose) P100 sa mercury
Salt solution ito like salinase and ito yung lalagay nyo sa nebulizer para i-nebulize si baby. You can also use this na may halong salbutamol if prescribed ng pedia nyo if in case parang may hika si baby. yung salbutamol kasi half lang nung vial ang pine-prescribe sa mga baby, e ang konti nun (parang 12-15 drops lang!) ubos agad yun kaka-on mo pa lang nung nebulizer so you add this NSS para matagal-tagal nyo nman manebulize si baby. 1 bottle siguro will last a long long time (probably more than 6 months-1 year depende sa use)
digital thermometer - around P300-P1200
you have to have one kasi delikado for babies na lagnatin (as is i-rush daw sa OR if may fever sabi ni pedia) you need this to check if may fever nga ba talaga si baby. we got safety first brand for my girl, ear thermometer yun and it gives the reading in 3 seconds. P1200 yun (ang mahal!) may ibang digital thermometer na tig-150 to 300 lang ang price
TRAVELLING diaper bag - baby couture, around P700 to 1800
when you're going out, this should contain diapers & baby wipes, cotton, damit ni baby, pamunas, & sapin. bottles & milk dispenser too if you bottle-feed. Kami since im breastfeeding wala ng dalang bottles . Maganda ang bags ng Baby Couture kasi may changing mat na yun na kasama plus may pockets yun sa loob to keep the bottles upright (if using) and/or keep baby's stuff organized, no need to rummage the entire bag pa when you need to get something.
carrier/sling - carriers, around P700; sling, around P1000
minsan kasi babies want to be carried instead kahit may dala kayo stroller. Best to have this para less backache for mom & dad and you can carry your baby and hands-free pa. read about 'attatchment parenting' para ma-encourage kayo to carry your babies i have yung baby sling and nakakatuwa yung attention that baby & i get whenever people see us and i love it kasi its very comfy to use.
stroller - price varies
if baby is willing to ride this while you are out eh di all the better. also, pag lumaki na si baby hirap na din naman siya i-carry ano kahit na may sling ka pa. also, this serves as my daughter's mobile nappy changing area. Haggard mag-change ng diapers sa mga cr ng malls!!
CLOTHES receiving blankets - about 6 pcs or more, P150 per blanket
pag newborn you'll be using this more often as newborns are mostly swaddled (nakabalot) all the time. Also, you use this as a general sapin whenever you will put your baby down (sa kama, sa crib, etc). You can also use this as baby's blanket pero tuck nyo lang ng maayos underneath baby's body to prevent SIDS.
tie-sides/button-down long sleeves
tie-sides/button-down short sleeves
tie-sides/button-down sleeveless I suggest you get mga 6pcs each lang na NB size. kasi baby will outgrow this by 1 to 1 1/2months of age. Babies change tops kasi atleast 3x a day (pagkagising, after bath, before sleeping) -- more if nabasa yung damit nya ng suka, laway, wiwi or poopoo.
mittens - about 6-12 pairs, 3 pairs for P100
babies will only use this for 1 month lang pero you have to change this mga 2x-3x a day kasi madalas isubo ng baby and pag wet na ng laway chempre dapat palitan mo na agad. Siguro mga 9 pairs ok na. Get the ones na garterized kasi yung di-tali mahirap gamitin and nahuhulog lagi.
booties / socks - about 6-12 pairs, 3 pairs for P100
babies also need this kasi their feet & their heads need to be covered all the time up until mga 1 month siguro. Better get socks na lang na de-garter din coz the ones na di-tali nahuhulog lagi.
pajamas - about 6pcs, 3 pairs for P180
depending on the weather pero maganda naka-pajama si baby sa gabi, even if its warm para you wont have to bother with a blanket anymore.
cap - about 3-6 pcs, 2 pcs for P150
keep baby's head covered most of the time, esp pag lalabas kayo. You will only need to use this up until 1 1/2 - 2 months.
gauze diapers, 1 dozen
you'll need 1 dozen coz you'll be using this A LOT as general pamunas ng baby, sapin for your clothes when burping the baby, sapin sa likod ng baby, pang-cover ng legs ni baby during the day etc.
*no need to buy BIGKIS coz this will only delay healing of umbilical stump.
STUFF FOR MOM right after deliverymaternity pads - 1 pack
after birth you will have lochia (heavy mens) and you'll be using this for several days. Buy 1 pack lang then you can use modess overnight pads na then afterwards back to regular sanitary pads na. Lochia should be gone by the 3rd week after birth if breastfeeding, longer if not.
waist-binderif CS operation, you will need this to support your tummy area. You will need to wear this every day & even when you sleep. the hospital will supply you with 1 waist binder so i suggest buy ka pang ng 1 or 2 more para may pamalit.
panty girdle - around P400
to be worn on top of regular panties, pampaliit ng puson. my co-workers swear by this altho ako very tamad to use this.
hth!!
